The intersection of Assessment and Remediation; Data navigation with Google Sheets
Thursday October 10, 2024 10:00am - 10:50am EDT
601
We would like to share some advanced formulas and strategies that we use to regroup students in Google Sheets. We will be focusing this session on mastering the formulas, VLookup, Countif, Countifs, CountA, Index/Filter, and Unique. These can be intimidating to many, but being able to implement them efficiently will make data disaggregation more effective.

This session will be geared towards Administration and Coaches who deal with / disaggregate student data. We will demonstrate how to use these formulas to compile student data quickly.
We will show mock student assessment data from various fake resources and teach attendees how to use these formulas to get all of this data in the same place, and in a way that it can be used to drive decision making.

We want attendees to walk away with some new ways to think about data driven decision making, and the resources to be able to do it.

Building Capacity for K-8 CS Integration: Resources and Opportunities for Indiana Educators
Thursday October 10, 2024 10:00am - 10:50am EDT
605
The purpose of this session is to introduce participants to professional learning opportunities and K-8 OER resources, all focused on the integration of the Indiana K-8 computer science standards (one strand of the science standards) into K-8 content areas. In 2023-24, IUB began a Next Level Computing Grant partnership with IDOE, primarily focused on discovering if and how EPPs around the state were preparing preservice teachers to integrate CS and conceptual thinking standards and concepts, and growing their capacity to prepare preservice teachers for the future. Thanks to IDOE, we were able to design and deliver resources on these topics both to preservice teachers AND the instructors of preservice teachers around the state. We ran a cohort of 20 college professors this spring, upscaling their knowledge of CS teaching, so that they can better equip their students. We are currently building a web portal that will house the resources, and we will be beginning another cohort of EPPs soon.  This year, we are expanding the grant work in several ways - primarily to in-service teachers - while still providing resources and professional learning to university faculty and students.  This session will quickly share the rationale and goals of this work, but the majority of the time will be spent leading participants through exploration and discovery of resources to support their teaching and enhance student learning. Depending on the makeup of the group, I will highlight particular content areas and learning experience designs that they might want to use in their classrooms. All of these learning experiences (lessons) are of course aligned with both Indiana content area and computer science standards in grades K-8. This webpage is incomplete and DATED (we're building a new portal now) but at least you can look to get the idea of what's available: https://education.indiana.edu/research/centers/crlt/projects/building-indiana-computing-capacity/index.html Participants will leave with a better background of what it means to integrate CS and computational thinking into literacy, math, etc., and they will gather many practical ideas and resources for classroom implementation.

Reclaiming Control: Transformative Strategies for Classroom Management
Thursday October 10, 2024 10:00am - 10:50am EDT
508
Building on the central belief that caring is the key to effective teaching, the “why”, “what”, and “how-to’s” of research-based classroom management strategies are the focus of this presentation.
Participants will be challenged to reexamine traditionally-held assumptions about behaviors that students bring with them to the classroom and will be asked to make adjustments to their educational philosophies based on this paradigm shift.
This is not, however, an “all talk, no action” presentation. Innovative, common sense techniques for classroom management will be modeled for and practiced by participants. Session attendees will return to the field equipped with the tools they need to put philosophy into effective practice.
Educational professionals know that the science of teaching requires developing specific, measurable goals, which determine mastery. The art of teaching rests on the instructor’s innate understanding of students’ needs and motivations, which are complex and difficult to identify, much less, to measure. Through clear, systematic instruction, this training proves how effective classroom management brings the art and science of teaching into balance, which in turn, translates into academic success and personal satisfaction for students.

Spice Up Your PD with Educator Voice and Choice
Thursday October 10, 2024 10:00am - 10:50am EDT
611
Professional development is helpful, but the way it is designed is not always helpful. While educators are encouraged to design learner-centered environments and provide learners with voice and choice, learning opportunities for educators do not always look this way. In a world where educators need to learn future-ready tech tools and tips to design engaging learning environments for their students, it is critical that the precious time they have for PD is productive and impactful. In this session, we will explore ways leadership and coaches can design educator-centered PD, taking lessons from some of the PD formats we were forced to utilize from the pandemic, and how those modalities can have a lasting impact. Examples will include podcast PD, virtual coaching sessions, gamified PD, and credentialing. Attendees will walk away with practical ideas, and an opportunity to plan to implement these tips in their role.

There’s No Crying in Assessment: Building a Supportive Culture of Assessment in Your School
Thursday October 10, 2024 11:00am - 11:50am EDT
611
Through this session, attendees will learn research-based strategies for building a supportive culture of assessment by:
1. Addressing assessment anxiety
2. Fostering a growth mindset toward assessment
3. Promoting teacher autonomy in assessment
4. Creating meaningful professional development

It is no surprise to any educator that assessment gets a bad rap, and with good reason. Accountability policies that connect school funding, teachers’ evaluations, and other stakes to standardized testing have poisoned the well. That leaves assessment experts, administrators, and data coaches in the difficult position of pushing faculty to do necessary but unpopular activities. It’s the education equivalent of asking a toddler to eat broccoli. But it doesn’t have to be that way!

Activities such as formative assessment and data-driven decision making are known to benefit student learning and are increasingly emphasized in policy. However, research has found that teachers do not always engage in these activities as often or as effectively as possible, which has led to attempts to understand this discrepancy between policy, research, and practice. Unfortunately, in doing so, researchers and policymakers often assume a deficiency on the part of teachers, such as a lack of knowledge of assessment. Making those assumptions often backfires by driving a wedge between researchers and educators. While gaps in teachers’ assessment knowledge can also contribute to their avoidance, my research has shown that is their training that is deficient, not the teachers themselves. Despite taking college courses and participating in professional development on assessment, many teachers did not find the experiences helpful because they were focused on measurement theory or administering standardized assessments, rather than practical, authentic skills. Teachers valued training that was directly applicable to their needs with assessment and data and allowed them to develop their skills in collaborative settings.

In my research I have further challenged assumptions about teachers’ deficiencies by taking a more holistic view influences on teachers’ assessment and data-driven decision making. I have found that teachers’ assessment practices are affected by their characteristics, such as their attitudes, self-efficacy, and autonomy related to assessment, as well as contextual factors such as classroom resources and professional development. One highly influential contextual factor is the school’s culture of assessment, the norms surrounding assessment and data use. A school’s culture of assessment is grounded in the administration’s view of assessment- whether assessment and data are conceptualized as an accountability measure or as a basis for continuous improvement. Even when teachers are confident with their assessment and data use skills, if they believe their principal is focused on achieving high test scores, they are hesitant to share their results for fear that they will be shamed for or be required to justify low scores. In contrast, when teachers feel that their principal views assessment as a tool for promoting student growth, they more readily engage with assessment and data, and seek opportunities to collaborate for further improvement.

Therefore, I have suggested that attempts to increase teachers’ use of assessment and data-driven decision making 1) take this holistic view by also addressing teachers’ attitudes and self-efficacy; 2) create supportive cultures of assessment by emphasizing a growth mindset towards assessment and promoting teacher autonomy; 3) teach about assessment in ways that teachers value. I have tested these strategies in my assessment courses for preservice teachers with great success. Students work collaboratively to create assessments and analyze data in an informal environment. This approach alleviates students’ anxiety about assessment and leaves them feeling confident about their assessment skills. In fact, students often say that the classes are enjoyable and useful. In this presentation I will share my research insights and strategies from my classes to help educators develop supportive cultures of assessment in their schools.

Discover, Engage, Code—Using Block Coding to Enhance Elementary Learning
Thursday October 10, 2024 1:00pm - 1:50pm EDT
605
Participants will be introduced to the concept of computer coding and how it is adapted for young learners through a basic block coding language designed to help students understand the coding process. This interactive session will feature a hands-on approach using block coding through Scottie Go!. Participants will receive a sample product and can access the platform virtually via an app on their phones, if they choose. Visual examples will also be presented to ensure everyone can follow along. Scottie Go! combines both virtual and hands-on elements, allowing students to create a code using physical blocks on a board. Once the code is assembled, students take a photo of it with a mobile device (i.e. iPad or phone). The program then runs the code, and Scottie moves through a challenge on the screen. If the code is correct, Scottie solves the challenge and proceeds to the next task. Incorrect codes require students to "debug" or fix the issue before being able to advance. While this session focuses on Scottie Go!, the coding concepts learned can be applied to any platforms teachers have available to them. Although not all platforms include the added benefit of physical pieces to aid in the coding learning process (which is one of the elements we love most about Scottie Go!), electronic versions are still adaptable to the concepts discussed during the session. In the next part of the session, participants will engage in led discussions and have the opportunity to try interactive lessons designed to incorporate learned coding skills and adapt them to other curriculum areas. Resources will include a STEM engineering and design project, which is thematically connected to Scottie and his space adventure. Participants will also brainstorm ways to apply algorithmic thinking in subjects such as writing/language arts, science processes, and mathematical computational thinking.

Maximize Video Use in Your Classroom with Edpuzzle
Thursday October 10, 2024 2:00pm - 2:50pm EDT
709

In this session, we'll go through the basics of finding a video in Edpuzzle (whether they prefer to find a video lesson that's already created in Edpuzzle, screen record their own video, or pull in a YouTube video), editing it to add assessment questions, assigning it to students, and then, the most important part — how teachers can utilize the data for formative assessment and make informed decisions to see which students or content areas need more support. We'll also focus on how Edpuzzle can be used meaningfully to increase engagement and student autonomy and save teachers valuable time. Participants will be encouraged to follow along and create a video lesson during the session to use with their students following Indiana Connected Educators (we will have time during the session for teachers to dive into the platform). This session will be appropriate for new and experienced users of Edpuzzle, as we'll highlight lesser-known features along with new features added this year.
